Abner Richard Williams (known as Dick), 92, passed on September 7, 2023, surrounded by loved ones in his home in Marietta, Ga. Dick was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, great uncle and good friend.
Dick was born on January 30, 1931, to Abner Richard Williams Sr. and Janie Rogers in Jackson, AL. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Soon Williams, his daughter Janie and son in law Brett Norman; daughter Laura Williams and Charles Barden; daughter Ginger and son in law Steve Johnson and 4 grandchildren - Samantha, Nathan, Brennan and Quinn. He is also survived by his cousin Bud and wife Julie Rogers, nephew Rick and wife Rose Bishop, nephew Tom and wife Pauline Bishop, niece in law Jennie Bishop, great-niece Katharine and husband Rock Marinov, great-nephew Robert and wife Ashley Bishop, great-nephew Phillip Bishop, great-niece Shannon and husband Nick Gottfried and 4 great-great-grandnieces/nephews - Liam, Luka, Anestyn and Lulu.
Dick spent his childhood running around Mobile, AL getting into mischief and pestering his older sister Virginia (Ginny). He started working a paper route at the age of 10 to help at home after his father passed when he was 9 years old. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1949. In 1950, he proudly enlisted in the Marine Corps to serve in the Korea War with George Company 3rd Battalion 1st Marines. He came home with a purple heart in 1951 after he was wounded in battle. From that point on he was a marine in spirit for the remainder of his life - Semper Fi!
Dick earned his civil engineering degree from Mississippi State. For the next 30 years he worked for the Corps of Engineers, starting in Alabama (8 years), proceeding to Korea (11 years) as the Chief of Foundations & Materials. He then continued his career in Germany (6 years), Hawaii (4 years) and ended his career in Korea which was his home away from home. Retirement didn't suit him, so he worked for the State Department (4 years) in Washington DC where he traveled to Columbia, Africa, India and several other countries and where he earned his name "Double O Dick." He then contracted with FEMA, assisting with natural disasters until 2006 when he finally retired. While he had a reputation at work for being tough, he couldn't have been more different at home.
Dick was a true gentleman, known for his humor, quick wit, love for gin martinis and ability to tell stories with his low southern drawl. Dick was progressive, always wanting to improve his health, knowledge and mental fortitude. He normally had the latest tech or iPhone, exercised daily, was ahead of the curve in health (cold plunging, saunas, functional medicine), meditated regularly and always carried index cards in his shirt pocket in case he wanted to pass time by solving math equations. The only thing he loved more than the marines, martini's, the beach, dining out, dogs and traveling, was his girls. He was the happiest when all the family was together during the annual vacation to Seagrove Beach, Florida. Dick was an incredible individual and a true class act, one of the last of his kind. He is loved beyond measure.
Dick Williams will be laid to rest at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA on September 15th. The family is hosting a celebration to honor a life well lived on Saturday, September 16th. Please reach out to someone in the family if you would like to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to https://www.toysfortots.org/
