Obituary

On October 16, 2024, the greatest husband, father, son, and brother we could have ever asked for left us too soon. Surrounded by his family, Alan passed away at Kennestone Hospital due to diabetic complications. Alan was loved by so many, and not a day will go by that we won't miss him.

Alan was born to David and Margaret McLean on August 30th, 1966, in Poughkeepsie, New York. Growing up, Alan enjoyed reading, bowling, riding his bike, and getting into trouble with his brothers John and Ian. The McLean family moved around frequently during Alan's childhood; going from New York to Michigan, Colorado, California, British Columbia and Georgia, but Alan made friends wherever he went. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1984, then attended Dutchess Community College, followed by Georgia Southern University before finishing his degree in French at Kennesaw State. It was during his time at Kennesaw State that he met his future wife, Nancy, while bartending at Waterstreet on Marietta Square. For thirty years, Alan and Nancy shared a marriage full of laughter and love.  The two of them spent as much time as possible with friends and family, went to lots of Braves and Falcons games, and vacationed in Aruba whenever they could. Alan and Nancy later had two children: Brad and Carly.

In 2000, Alan's love for food and the restaurant business led him and Nancy to open their own restaurant, "Souper Grill", where he was successful for several years. Later, he went on to manage restaurants such as Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse and Mary Mac's Tea Room and was always able to create a family environment among the staff and regulars. Alan had a gift for making people feel seen and appreciated; he even taught himself Spanish to connect better with the cooking staff; an act that showed his respect and eagerness to learn.

Outside of work, Alan was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time outside doing yardwork with his kids and playing with the dogs. He loved movies, classic rock, singing, telling witty jokes, and was always working on a new project. The best family nights spent together often included grilling burgers or steaks, playing games of darts or poker, watching the Braves play, and of course, the reserved hour for Wheel of Fortune and
Jeopardy. His hilarious impersonations and never-ending dad jokes will be with us forever.

Alan is preceded in death by his father, David McLean; grandparents, Joseph and Molly Kneebone; mother-in-law, Jackie Marano; sister-in-law, Lisa McLean; and cousin, Ken Easton.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Brad and Carly; mother, Margaret; brothers, John and Ian; and nephew, David McLean, along with friends and loved ones who will feel his absence deeply.

To those who knew him, Alan was more than a great cook or a jokester; he was someone who made life better with his warm personality, tender heart, and ability to have fun. We'll think of him every time we use one of his corny jokes or listen to his favorite songs. We know he would be happy that we are carrying on doing the things he loved.
