Obituary

Alan Schuyler Meadows passed away on May 9, 2020 in his daughter's home in Waleska, Georgia. He was born in Riverview, Florida on February 17, 1932 and grew up in a rural home with his sister, Margaret Louise Meadows and his parents, John Schuyler Meadows and Doris Louise Caldwell. Fascinated with aviation since he was a child, it is no surprise that Alan owned a small airplane before he owned a car. He would fly back and forth from his home in Riverview to the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering.

Alan was a pilot in the US Air Force for a dozen years before he became an airline pilot for Pan American Airlines in 1967. He flew for Pan Am and later, United Airlines and claimed he never worked a day in his life, since he was just doing what he loved.

He married Carolyn Jean Simmons in 1955 and had four children: Lisa Kay Meadows, Kimberlee Meadows, Gregory Alan Meadows and Phillip Grant Meadows. The family moved often with the Air Force -- living in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, Bermuda, California and Washington -- before finally settling in northern California when Alan began flying for the airlines. After 17 years of marriage, Alan and Jean divorced and Alan married the late Barbara Hiller. He leaves
8 grandchildren: Garrett Garfield, Gordon Garfield, Genevieve Garfield, Gabrielle Garfield, Grace Garfield, Gloria Garfield, Grant Meadows and Parker Meadows, as well as 11 great- grandchildren.

Alan was a talented woodworker and handyman, an avid Jeopardy fan and was widely noted for his crazy stories (all true!) and jokes. He loved to help people and spent many years volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, assisting teachers and students at Tuttle Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida and serving in various church congregations.

Those wishing to send online condolences may do so at www.lakesidefuneralhomega.com. Lakeside Funeral Home 121 Claremore Drive Woodstock GA 30188 ph. (770) 293-2757 is honored to assist the Meadows family.

A private family service is planned in Riverview, Florida.
