Obituary

Allen R. Baker passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, after a long period of declining health. He was 90 years old.

Allen was born on December 17, 1935, in Jeffers, Minnesota, to Bernard and Coral Baker. He graduated from East Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Iowa before enlisting in the United States Army. During his three years of active-duty service, he was stationed in Korea, Japan and Thailand.

Following his military service, Allen pursued his passion for engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and later a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa.

On July 23, 1960, Allen married Marilyn J. Buttolph in Waterloo, Iowa. Together they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. Allen is survived by his sons James Baker and Eric Baker; daughter-in-law Kristy Baker; grandson Andrew Baker; granddaughter Caroline Baker and her husband, Jon Lee; step-grandson David Krauss and his wife, Lety; and step-great-granddaughters Audrey and Mia Krauss.

Throughout his distinguished career, Allen worked for consulting engineering firms in Iowa, North Dakota, Illinois and Florida, where he specialized in the planning and design of potable water and wastewater treatment systems. He was a registered professional engineer in several states and an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Water Works Association and the Water Pollution Control Federation.

Wherever he and Marilyn lived, they became deeply involved in their Lutheran church communities. Allen faithfully served in numerous church leadership roles, including many years as church council president, offering his time, wisdom and steady leadership.

Allen was happiest when he was busy—whether solving engineering challenges, serving his church, tackling projects around the house or lending a helping hand to others. Above all, he was a man of integrity, kindness and quiet strength.

Allen lovingly cared for Marilyn as she faced the challenges of muscular dystrophy. His steadfast commitment to her reflected the depth of his love and selflessness, leaving an enduring example of faithfulness for all who knew him.

Allen will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments and lifelong service, but also for the love he shared with his family, the faith that guided his life and the countless lives he touched through his compassion and generosity.
