Obituary

Betty Jane Alsobrooks Hickerson, 76, of Canton, Georgia, died peacefully at home on Sunday, July 23, 2023, after a long period of illness. Jane was born on Saturday, August 10, 1946 in Macon, Mississippi and was the youngest of the four children of Joseph Marshal Alsobrooks and Irene Ellis Alsobrooks of Erin, Tennessee. Jane graduated from Houston County High School in Erin, Tennessee and attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Jane married Archie Hickerson of Clarksville, Tennessee in 1974, and they would have been married 49 years this August. They spent most of their years together in Nashville, Tennessee and later lived in Virginia and Georgia. Jane and Archie lovingly raised two children, Kellie Murphy of Woodstock, Georgia and Casey Hickerson of Seattle, Washington, and Jane delighted in her role as "Granny" to her two grandchildren, Sam and Anna Edwards. Even when she was sick, Jane would still do pretend-play with Anna, and she sometimes commented that Anna was her best medicine. A talented seamstress, decorator, and cook, Jane especially loved entertaining, hosting holiday and birthday celebrations, and social get-togethers with good food and good conversation. Jane had a sharp mind, strong opinions, and an eye for detail, pursuing excellence in everything she did.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her eldest brother, Lloyd "Ras" Alsobrooks of Nashville, Tennessee, and her only sister, Sue Kupiec of Erin, Tennessee. She is survived by her devoted husband, daughter, son, and grandchildren as well as her brother, George Alsobrooks of Cumberland City, Tennessee.

A memorial gathering and luncheon will be held at Lakeside Funeral Home in Woodstock, Georgia, on Sunday, August 6, 2023, from noon to 2 p.m. Flowers and memorial contributions are equally welcome. Jane would have appreciated donations to the American Heart Association or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
