Donald Lamar Smith, 72, of Marietta, Georgia passed away on April 8th, 2021 at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 beginning at 12:00 p.m. until the service time at 2:00 p.m. at Lakeside Funeral Home, 121 Claremore Dr. Woodstock, Georgia. Al Gilbert will be officiating.
Don was born in Greenwood, Mississippi to Grady Lamar and Meredith Christine Smith on January 1, 1949. He went to school at West Jefferson High School in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Don married Betty Cavaliere Smith on December 28, 1974 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He graduated from The University of New Orleans. Don retired from Houston Wire and Cable where he was employed as a Corporate Account Manager.
An active member of the Shallowford Church of Marietta, Georgia, Don's life was a testimony of his Christian faith. He was a devoted family man and a loyal and generous friend who led others to Christ by example.
Don was a man of great generosity to friends, family and community. He devoted years of service in several capacities to the Boy Scouts of America and Georgia Special Olympics. Don's zest for life was reflected in his numerous interests and hobbies which included everything related to cooking from the stove top to the bar-b-que grill to numerous chili cook-offs to making wine. Don enjoyed reading his collection of Foxfire books which supported his interest in early American Heritage and was manifested in his hobby of restoring WWII Garands. Don was a member of several organizations and clubs including the International Chili Society, CASI, M1 Collectors Club, Garand Collectors Association, and the NRA. These interests all provided doors to his love of meeting and getting to know people. Don enjoyed vacations; a favorite was time at the beach with friends and family. But Don's greatest love was spending time with his family anytime, anywhere—particularly with his sons and grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife, Betty Smith; sons, Brian Paul Smith, David Matthew Smith and wife Amanda, and two grandchildren, John Paul Smith and Taylor Wren Smith; four sisters, Julie Kelsey; Mary Staton and husband, Mike; Sherry Staton and husband, Randy; Sandy Kelly and husband, Phil; and numerous nieces and nephews.
