Woodstock Fire & Rescue's Retired Sergeant Edward Michael St. Romain, 58, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he received a double lung transplant in February. Ed served for 30 years in the fire service and also served as a Sgt. Combat Engineer in the United States Army.
He was known as a loving family man, always greeting his wife Doris with, "Hey beautiful." The doctors and nurses that treated Ed commented that they were envious of the love affair the two had even after 24 years of marriage. Ed brought with him happiness and good times. Nurses at Vanderbilt began to request him during his two-month stay and the doctors loved talking to him. "He was very special, and we were instantly attached to him," stated one doctor.
Because he was a firefighter/paramedic for so many years, the doctors said Ed used to give them a report of his condition when they performed rounds each day. Hard-headed, but with one of the softest hearts around, his "brothers" at the Woodstock Fire Department knew just what buttons to push until the "angry whisper" came out and everyone started laughing. Ed knew they had been teasing and would break out in a big smile.
Always a team player, Ed would take on the tasks that no one else wanted, give generously of his time, and always had his friends' backs no matter what. According to Chief Dave Soumas, "Ed was a loyal employee to the City of Woodstock, and we value his contributions. The department will miss him greatly." Ed was a recent retiree from the Woodstock Fire Department after nearly 20 years of service. He remained employed at Pickens County 911 as a dispatcher after transferring from the fire truck due to his illness.
Ed is survived by his wife Doris, daughter Emily, and twin sons Elisha and Samuel, all of Blue Ridge, GA; adopted daughter Jessie, of Dalton, GA; sisters and brothers-in-law Joan and James Watkins, Louise and Jeffrey Read, Madeleine and Jeff Tyson, and Terri and Burl Easterling; brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Ruth St. Romain, Stephen and Donna St. Romain; brother William St. Romain; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Drs. Clyde and Madeleine St. Romain, sister Claire Stephens, father and mother-in-law James and Debra Davenport.
An 11:30 a.m. funeral service is planned for Monday, April 5, 2021 at Lakeside Funeral home in Woodstock, Georgia with Rev. Jackie Ellington and Lay Speaker George Williams III officiating. Pallbearers are Firefighters Brian Dean, Daniel Allen, Chris Durden, Jake Reppert, Dale Blair, David Gray, with Lead Escort Bobby Stilson.
