On Sunday, July 10, 2022, Frank Joseph Neuner, honored Veteran, loving husband, father, and patriot passed away at the age of 85.
Frank was born on August 20, 1936, to Frank Sr. and Dorothy Neuner in Orange, NJ, but moved to Bloomfield, NJ two years later, where he went to school and spent the summers on Greenwood Lake. After graduating from high school in 1954, he enrolled in West Virginia Wesleyan College, majoring in chemistry. Frank was accepted into the United States Naval Flight Program in the fall of 1958 where he began his career at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, FL, and earned his wings two years later at NAS Patuxent River, MD. In 1961, Frank met his first wife, Jeanne, while home on leave. They were married for 52 years and had one daughter, Julia.
Frank's distinguished Navy career included heavy involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis, co-navigating the USS Independence aircraft carrier, anti-submarine surveillance during the Cold War, work as a flight instructor, and assignment to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Lieutenant Commander Frank Neuner retired in 1984 having served 25 years in the Navy.
Frank then returned to Pensacola, FL where he began a second career in real estate. In 2008, Jeanne and Frank moved to Woodstock, GA to be closer to Julia and enjoy their retirement. Jeanne passed in 2015 from Parkinson's Disease. In 2015, Frank met his second wife, Esme Goodwin of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, who was visiting her sister in Woodstock. Frank and Esme continued their correspondence after her return to South Africa, and she later moved to the United States to be with Frank. They were married in May of 2016 and enjoyed their life together in Woodstock.
Those who knew Frank knew of his many passions. His interests spanned from world history and geography, to fishing, woodworking, and cooking. He had a life-long love of animals, sports, aviation, and coin and stamp collecting. Above all, the discipline and patriotism Frank learned in the Navy never left him, as friends and family will attest. He was a generous and loving, yet quiet man loved by so many.
Frank is survived by his second wife, Esme Neuner, daughter, Julia Nichols, and son-in-law, Scott Nichols. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Sr. and Dorothy Neuner, his sister, Doris Sheehan, and by his first wife, Jeanne Neuner.
