Obituary

George Herbert Buchanan, age 91, of Canton, GA passed away on April 9, 2019 at home surrounded by family. He was born March 27, 1928 in Pueblo, CO to parents Arthur James and Edith Marie (Baker), the fourth of five children. The family relocated to Holdrege, NE and immediately following high school, George joined the U.S. Navy, completing two tours, followed by a brief stint with the U.S. Army.

George was introduced to his best friend and partner-in-life Patricia at church and they married on August 2, 1953 in Wichita, KS. Taking advantage of the GI Bill, George graduated from the University of Kansas in 1955. The young couple relocated to Virginia and then Maryland, where they raised their four children.

George had a fulfilling career with the Treasury Department and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture as special investigator and later working in staffing and training. The highlight of his career, however, was the period of time that he was "on loan" to the United Nations in Rome, Italy. This was an adventure that the family will never forget and all remember fondly.

During retirement, George and Pat loved to travel and he managed to visit all fifty states. No matter where he happened to be, he found a way to be active in his community. He was also an accomplished card player, avid reader and was remarkably well-informed on global affairs. He had a wry sense of humor that never left him. In Florida, he especially loved introducing his visiting children and grandchildren to Disney World. His desire to be closer to them led to the decision to return to Georgia, where some of his favorite memories were those spent with his grandchildren, watching their games, attending their recitals, and being immensely proud of all they have accomplished.

George remained an active and dedicated member of the Church of Christ throughout his life, was involved in several church plantings, and by his quiet and steady example, greatly influenced his children and grandchildren in their spiritual development.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Ann (Smith); sons James Arthur Buchanan (Margaret Ann) of Marietta, GA and Martin Herbert Buchanan (Charisse) of Asheville, NC; daughters, Shirley Ann Cooke (Dan) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Susan Lynn Alongi (Thomas) of Canton, GA; along with ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, a younger brother and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A celebration of life service will be held April 20, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Lakeside Funeral Home, 121 Claremore Drive, Woodstock, GA 30188. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.  All are welcome to come celebrate Mr. Buchanan's life.
