Obituary

George Nugent Monro IV, born on December 7, 1939 to George "Steve" Monro III and Margaret "Peggy" Monro in Detroit Michigan, passed away on January 8, 2024. George is predeceased by his parents, wife Sheila and brother Steve. He is survived by his daughter Michelle Lucento (Tony), son George N. Monro V, granddaughters Gabriella and Eliana Lucento, and brother Bill Monro (Nancy), nieces and nephews.

George's youth was spent in Grosse Pointe, Michigan on the shores of Lake Sinclair. Cultivating the trait inherited from his father who served in the US Navy during WWII, George became a skillful amateur sailor. As a mere 14-year-old, George won the Detroit Yacht Club Regatta in 1954! His passion for sailing developed a lifelong love of adventure and exploration. He fondly reminisced about his education at Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts. In early adulthood, George continued his affection for maritime adventures by working on an oil tanker off the California coast.

Not restricting his adventures only to the sea, George attended Hillsdale College in Michigan. Upon graduating, he started his career in banking. While simultaneously serving in the Air National Guard, he came to the realization that being a banker was far too boring (in his own words). He decided to take his explorer spirit to the air by joining Eastern Airlines in the early 60s. He met Sheila Rogan at an airline mixer in Detroit and they wed in 1967. They were married for 47 wonderful years.

George's sales role with Eastern Airlines moved him to Chicago, Washington D.C., San Antonio, Memphis, and finally Savannah, GA. If you were an elementary school student in the Savannah area in the 1980s, you may have taken your first flight thanks to a program George created to share the joy of flying with youngsters. Unfortunately, Eastern Airlines was not good at managing finances and declared bankruptcy and soon he was on to his next adventure.

As a sales agent for R+L Gator Freightways, he covered the land, sea, and air. He made many great friends while helping companies move freight through the Lowcountry and beyond.

He gave back to the Savannah community by volunteering frequently at various organizations and fundraisers, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Ft. Pulaski National Monument. But his passion was Oatland Island Wildlife Center where George volunteered for 30+ years. Friends and guests alike would say he was "the sunshine" at Oatland. He always had a great story to tell or a way to bring a laugh. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

George loved Savannah, its beauty, and charm and never wanted to leave. A celebration of his life will be held on March 12th at 3PM at Oatland Island Wildlife Center. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to Friends of Oatland Island ( www.friendsofoatland.org ) or All Saints Episcopal Church, Tybee Island, ( www.allsaintstybee.com ).
