Obituary

Harriet B. Louden, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on October 8, 2019. She was 88 years old. Born in Willmar, MN on March 9, 1931 to Annetta and Frank Whipkey, she is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Louden-Kubin of Roswell, GA, two son-in-laws, John and Wolfgang, two grandsons, John James and Christopher James, and numerous nieces and nephews. Harriet is predeceased by her parents, her husband James W. Louden, her daughter Liza von Claparede and her 4 sisters, Kate, Gladys, Geraldine and Elaine.

Harriet's interests have always been in the Arts. She earned her bachelor's degree at St Cloud State University (MN), and her Master's degree from Montclair State University (NJ).

Her Post Graduate work was done in Speech and Theater at the University of Minnesota, N Michigan University, Marquette University and the University of Missouri. She taught Speech, Theatre and English for 35 years in high schools in 7 states, following her husband's career with J.C. Penney.

Harriet always reached out to the communities in which she taught. While in Marquette she created the first "Upper Peninsula Art Exhibit" which won the Governor's award for Innovative Art. In Hartford, WI and St Louis, Mo, she created Children's Theatre troupes which played at day care centers, retirement homes and police and fire departments.

She served as Chair-Person of the Speech and Drama department at Westfield High School (NJ) for 20 years. While living for NJ she was privileged to study with the late Lee Strasberg of the famous Actors Studio.

Harriet retired in 1985 and she and Jim moved to Arizona. They divided their time between homes in Tempe, Pine and Scottsdale.  In 1987 Harriet formed the ASU Theatre Association, bringing in casting directors, agents and contract lawyers from Hollywood to work directly with ASU Speech and Drama students. Later on she formed the Scottsdale Reader's Theatre. Through Louden Enterprises, she and Jim toured the U.S. and Europe sponsoring Southwestern art and artists.

Following the passing of her beloved husband Jim in 2006, Harriet moved to Roswell, GA in 2008 to be closer to her family.

She will be missed by her beloved family, and friends and neighbors. A memorial service will take place at Lakeside Funeral Home, 121 Claremore Drive, Woodstock, GA at 3:00 PM Sunday, October 13, 2019. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to the local or high school theatre groups of your choice.
