Obituary

James McLeod Mitchell, 77, of Marietta, GA passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, following multiple periods of illness. Jim was born on June 7, 1947, to John T. and Peggy Ann (McLeod) Mitchell in Fort Knox, KY. He joined brother John III and was later joined by sister Ann and twin brothers Robert and William for a family commitment to service in the U.S. Air Force.

Jim graduated first from Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery, AL in 1965 and then from Troy University in Troy, AL in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Business Administration. He then entered the U.S. Army service and was stationed primarily in Germany. Following his honorable discharge in August 1971, he settled in Atlanta and began his lifelong career in information technology management with Georgia Power Company. He advanced in IT management serving in increasingly responsible positions with Kaiser Permanente (1992-1996), Ceridian Corporation (1996-2008), and Recall Corporation (2010-2013). Jim retired from Recall Corporation as Senior Manager of Global IT Networks and Outsourced Operations and was responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of voice and data communications globally, including 305 locations in 23 countries.

In late 1981 he reconnected with his college sweetheart, Coleen Carey, and they were married on April 3, 1982, in San Antonio, TX where both sets of parents had retired. Jim and Coleen continued their Atlanta/Marietta residency throughout their marriage. She survives. They were godparents to and have been lifelong support for Danya Sasak Gault and god-grandparents to Archer Gault.

Jim and Coleen shared their life with many four-legged and winged friends with an open home and warm hearts. They also became SCUBA enthusiasts and spent two weeks every summer at their timeshare on Cayman Brac in the British West Indies. There they became friends with other timeshare owners from across the U.S. and England who had properties at the same time. Good diving and good times with dive buddies continued for well over two decades. In retirement, Jim became active in the American Legion Post 29 in Marietta, serving as Service Officer.

In addition to his wife Coleen, Jim is survived by his brother John Mitchell III and his wife Charlotte, his sister Ann Jones and her husband John, his brother Robert (Bobby) Mitchell and his wife Becky, and his brother William (Billy) Mitchell and his wife Laura. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents.
