Jerry May was born at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 9, 1965. He grew up in Atlanta and was a wild child. He needed responsibility so he started his first job at 13 years old. He worked several jobs before he was shot and paralyzed at the age of 19 while working.  Nine years afterward, his future wife would come into his life to care for him. About 2 1/2 years later, they would marry and remain married until his death.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Hulsey and stepdad Marvin Hulsey, his dad Harold May, his sister Amanda May, his mother and father-in-law, Emmer Lou and Billy Rhodes, as well as his nephew, Joseph Fowler. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Paula May, and his son Arklis May. His brother Marvin (Theresa) Hulsey and his sister Donna (Jeff) West. Several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews also survive.
