Obituary

John F. (Jack) Dotter, MD, FACR, passed away peacefully the morning of August 8, 2022, after a battle with dementia. He was born February 15, 1930, to Merion Julius and Mary Margaret (née Miller) Dotter in Columbus, Ohio, where he was the youngest of four. Jack was a 1947 graduate of Columbus Aquinas College High School and a 1955 graduate of The Ohio State University Medical School. He completed his residency with the United States Public Health Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

In 1961 he returned to Columbus and joined Radiology, Inc., where he was a partner until his retirement in 1997, although he continued to work part-time until 2002. He was the first radiologist in his group to learn and then teach mammography and ultrasound.

He was a longtime member of the Radiological Society of North America, represented Mt Carmel Health as Hospital Medical Staff Representative in the American Medical Association, and was president of the medical staff of Mt. Carmel Health in 1971 and 1982. In 1992 he became a Fellow in the American College of Radiology.

He was passionate about radiology, serving as a mentor to many physicians and radiologic technologists.

In 2002 Jack fully retired; and Jack and Sharon relocated to Marietta, Georgia, to be closer to children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong Ohio State Buckeye fan, enjoying season football tickets, which he freely shared with friends and family. Jack traveled to Greece, Russia, the UK, India, Africa, Brazil, and many other places. He enjoyed taking photographs of the places he visited. He loved God, family, classical music, reading, playing and watching golf.

In 1957, he married Marlene Marquardt, who died of breast cancer in 1976. He and Marlene had three children, Mike, Bill, and Jeanne. In 1978 he married Sharon Harman Adams and adopted her son, Brad.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents; first spouse Marlene; daughter Jeanne; and siblings Edward Dotter, Richard Dotter, and Joan Purinton.

He is survived by his wife Sharon; sons Michael (Lavonne) of Ohio; William of North Carolina; and Bradley (Jill) of Georgia; grandchildren Tristian James and Quentin of Ohio; Andrew of Washington, D.C. and Christopher of Texas; and Kaylen, Jacob, Colton, and Lucas of Georgia; great-grandchildren Madison and Charlotte James of Ohio.
