Nannette Clements Johnston, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2023 at Oaks at Towne Lake, Woodstock, Georgia.
Nannette was born September 11, 1934 in Cleveland, Texas, the daughter of Thomas Calhoun Clements and Norine Boothe Clements. Her parents preceded her in death.
Nannette had fond memories of spending time and eating ice cream in her father's drug store, Clements Brothers Drug Store in Cleveland, Texas. Nannette was a graduate of Livingston High School in Livingston, Texas. She attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
Joe and Nannette were set up on a blind date by their respective roommates and were married in Houston, Texas in 1958. She and Joe enjoyed 65 years in a loving and supportive marriage. During the early years of their marriage, they lived in South Carolina and Texas before moving to Columbus, Georgia in 1964.
In Columbus, Nannette and Joe raised their three children: Mark, David and Jananne. In 1975, she began working at Blanchard Elementary School as the Secretary to the Principal. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1996. She is fondly remembered for her kindness and friendly smile by children, parents, teachers, and custodians. She joined the Muscogee Retired Educators Association and remained an active member for many years. She still looked forward to receiving the newsletter in the mail.
Nannette and Joe were avid genealogists. They spent years researching family history way before Ancestory.com even existed. They enjoyed trips to libraries to look at old microfiche of birth, marriage, and death certificates, and many walks through cemeteries in Georgia and Texas to trace the family history. She was proud to secure original letters written from her Great-Grandfather William S. Boothe to his wife from the frontlines of the Civil War. She has left many three-ring binders of very organized family history and family photo albums which the family will cherish.
Over the years, Joe and Nannette were active members of Waldrop Memorial Baptist Church, Morningside Baptist Church, and St. John United Methodist Church.
Joe and Nannette moved to Acworth, Georgia in 2002 to be near David and his family. She enjoyed their new home and the opportunity to interact with David, Liz, and their three children. She was a very loving grandmother, and loved spending time with the grandchildren.
Nannette was known by most friends as Nannette, while some close family called her Nannie, her children called her Mom, but her most favorite name may have been given to her by her first grandson Ryan and that name is Maw-Maw.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Joe Floyd Johnston and their three children. Their two sons are Mark and his wife, Kelly (Walsh) Johnston of High Point, North Carolina, David and his wife Elizabeth "Liz" (Cromey) Johnston of Woodstock, Georgia, and their daughter, Jananne Johnston of Woodstock, Georgia. There are five grandchildren, Joseph Ryan Johnston and his wife Kerry (Meulman) Johnston of Gastonia, North Carolina, Rachel Ann (Johnston) Melton and her husband Nick Melton of Belmont, North Carolina, Emily Page Johnston and her fiancé Jesse Kunimoto of Nashville, Tennessee, Andrew "Drew" David Johnston and his girlfriend Madison "Madi" Marquess, and Chloe Grace Johnston of Woodstock, Georgia. There are five great-grandchildren, Caleb Mark Johnston, Cora Elizabeth Johnston and Carly Rose Johnston of Gastonia, North Carolina, Jaxson "Jax" Powell Melton, and Kash Reid Melton of Belmont, North Carolina. There are four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Nannette's sister Suzanne Clements Foster and her children Joseph Thomas Foster, Jeffrey Todd Foster, and Laura Dianne Foster live in Texas.
Nannette also leaves a loving extended family of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law Betty Johnston.
Nannette was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. We were privileged to have her in our lives. Nannette will be sorely missed by her family and others who knew her well. May she rest in peace.
