Patricia (Pat) Ann Buchanan, 91, of Marietta, Georgia passed away peacefully December 2, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, George Buchanan. She is survived by her sons, James Buchanan (Margaret Ann) of Marietta, GA and Martin Buchanan (Charisse) of Asheville, NC; daughters, Shirley Cooke (Dan) of Myrtle Beach, SC and Susan Alongi (Tom) of Canton, GA. Pat was also blessed with ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Pat was born November 11, 1932 in Caddo County, Oklahoma on a farm. Early on it was obvious she would be a life-long learner and she became the first in her family to attend college. Pat was introduced to her best friend and partner-in-life George at church and they married on August 2, 1953 in Wichita, KS. Their life was a journey filled with mutual respect, love, and a shared commitment to God and family. They lived in Maryland during their working years, raising their children with love and dedication. Retirement took them to Georgia and then Florida, where they learned to play golf and enjoy all things Disney. They eventually returned to Georgia to be closer to their children and grandchildren, and they enjoyed watching all of their recitals and games and supporting them in every possible way.
Pat was known for her pragmatic outlook, balanced with a nurturing and encouraging nature. With a self-deprecating sense of humor, and down-to-earth personality, she connected easily with everyone she met.
Reflecting on her life, Pat often said she had lived a life that far exceeded what a young girl from a farm in rural Kansas could have ever imagined. She was very proud of her early years as an elementary school teacher, and later, a successful real estate broker. As a skilled card player, she delighted in friendly competition. Travel was a cherished hobby as well, and she and George explored the USA coast to coast in one of the many RVs they owned throughout the years.
Pat's faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she remained an active and dedicated member of the Church of Christ throughout her life, supporting several church plantings and building a robust community of friends along the way. Her advice, both straightforward and kind, was often sought after and deeply appreciated.
A special thank-you goes to all the staff at Brickmont and Atherton Memory Care facilities and Trinity Hospice Care for the care shown to Pat during her last years of life.
Pat will be laid to rest at Georgia National Cemetery next to her beloved husband, and a family celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Walk to End Alzheimer's or any favorite charity.
