Polly "Maerell" G. Nealey, 90, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026.
If you knew Polly, you knew two things: she would probably have something witty to say, and she was almost certainly not sitting still. A woman of remarkable energy, sharp humor, and deep love for her family, Polly lived a life full of hard work, laughter, and service to others.
For all of her professional life, Polly worked as an insurance underwriter, earning the respect of coworkers and clients alike through her strong work ethic, quick mind, and no-nonsense honesty. Her coworkers affectionately nicknamed her "LMAT"—Little Miss Acid Tongue—a title she wore proudly and earned through her legendary sarcasm and razor-sharp wit.
Polly loved cooking, (Fried chicken, cornbread, greens, banana pudding) gardening, (She grew the best tomatoes) quilting, sewing, reading, road trips, picnics, and spending time in the mountains. More than anything, however, she loved caring for those around her. She was known not just for preparing wonderful meals, but for making sure everyone was fed. Whether family, friends, or unexpected guests, no one left Polly's table hungry. And after every meal, she was ready for a sweet treat—as long as it wasn't "too sweet."
She delighted in babies, often scooping them up and letting them ride the family dog, Duke, as if he were a pony. Those moments brought her endless joy. She was also a devoted animal lover. Every cat she owned was lovingly named "Kitty," and every dog was named "Duke."
Polly's faith was a guiding force throughout her life. For decades, she was a devoted member of the choir at First Baptist Church of Woodstock, where she faithfully shared her love of music and worship. She enjoyed M*A*S*H, The Andy Griffith Show, The Carol Burnett Show, and a good romantic comedy. Her favorite song was 'My Jesus' by Anne Wilson, a song whose message reflected the faith and hope she carried throughout her life.
One of her greatest pleasures was taking walks in nature around the home her husband built for her—a home she lovingly lived in for fifty years. She couldn't let a good breeze pass without stopping to comment on and enjoy it. For her family, those walks became cherished memories and a reflection of the simple things she treasured most.
Polly also loved Chick-fil-A, where she met her dear friend Betty Williams once a week for decades. She often declared, "There's nothing better than hot chicken," after taking the first bite of the meal, and those weekly gatherings became a treasured tradition.
Born on March 25, 1936, in Morganton GA, Polly was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Nealey; her son, Rodney Nealey; and her siblings, Flora Tipton, Frank Grice, Paul Grice, and Roger Grice.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Nealey and his wife, Sandy Nealey; her son Rodney Nealey's wife Victoria Prevost Nealey, her brother, Ralph Grice; her grandchildren, Joshua Nealey, Hannah Bruneau, Marybeth Wells, Josiah Nealey, Bethany Nealey Rowles, and Ethan Nealey; five great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Polly's legacy is one of hard work, unwavering devotion to family, quick humor, and boundless love. The world is a little quieter without her sharp one-liners, but her laughter, generosity, and love will live on in the many lives she touched.
