Obituary

Dr. Rhonda S. Pettit, 65, of Woodstock, Georgia, passed away on the morning of September 8, 2025. Born on October 19, 1959, in Sandusky, Ohio, Rhonda lived a life defined by faith, service, kindness, and love.

Rhonda was a woman of remarkable gifts and deep compassion. She was the first in her family to pursue a higher education, earning her Bachelor of Science from Purdue University, followed by her Masters of Divinity, Masters of Theology, and Doctor of Philosophy from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Education was always important to her—not just for herself, but as a way to open doors for others.

Her career was much more than work; it was her ministry. As a school counselor at Arnold Mill Elementary, Rhonda poured her heart into helping young minds navigate their own worth and potential. She also served as a clinical director, director of family and children's therapy, and a hospice chaplain. She was certified as a pastoral counselor and fellow through the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and she helped establish The Samaritans Counseling Center—a nationally recognized organization in Atlanta, Georgia. No matter the role, Rhonda was a bright light and a steady source of encouragement, compassion, and wisdom for the many lives she touched.

Outside of her professional calling, Rhonda treasured her family and friends. She had a quick wit, a ready smile, and a way of making everyone feel loved. She loved the simple joys of life—her books, quilt shops, sewing, animals, sharing laughter and listening deeply with loved ones, and savoring good chocolate. Her kindness, humor, devotion, and unwavering love will be remembered by all who knew her.

Rhonda is preceded in death by her mother, Isabella "Peggy" Pettit; her father, Charles Samuel Pettit; brothers, Larry and Jerry Pettit; sisters-in-law, Julie and Kimberly Pettit; and niece, Michelle Jaquess.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Katie; her sister, Rose Leach; her brother, Perry Pettit; Rose's children Mike Leach, Jeni Matthews, Lori Newman, and their families; and Perry's children Sherry Devore, Tanya Burnette, Eric Pettit, and their families.

Family and friends are invited to gather in Rhonda's honor at Lakeside Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Monday, September 15, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A service celebrating her life will take place Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 4:00 pm, with visitation beginning an hour prior.

Rhonda's life was a beautiful reminder of the power of love, kindness, and service. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those she so dearly loved and encouraged.
