There are some people whose lives are almost impossible to sum up in a few paragraphs, and Roldan Fernandez was one of them.
His children remember a childhood filled with memories—camping trips, long road trips, little adventures, and their first family vacation to Savannah in 2000, just two years after the family moved to the United States. Looking back, they realize those moments were never simply about where they went. They were about being together. They were about a father doing everything he could to give his family a good life and memories they would carry with them long after the trips were over.
Roldan was an incredibly intelligent man. He graduated from college with a degree in agricultural engineering, but when he came to the United States, life took him down a different path. He began painting alongside his brother, learned the trade, and eventually went out on his own. Through hard work and determination, he built a successful living with his own hands, taking great pride in his work and making sure the people who trusted him with their homes received exactly what they wanted.
That was simply who Roldan was. He could build. He could repair. He could look at something that seemed broken and somehow figure out how to make it work again. There was rarely a problem for which he could not find a solution. He was constantly fixing something, creating something, or improving something. His intelligence was not just something one heard when he spoke; it could be seen in the way he lived his life.
More than anything, he worked hard for his family.
Ten years ago, Roldan lost the love of his life, his wife Emma. For another decade, he found the strength to continue without his bride beside him. His family knew how deeply he loved her, and they knew how deeply he missed her.
And perhaps that is where the family's grief and peace meet.
They are heartbroken that he is gone. They will miss his voice, his stories, his advice, his stubbornness, his ability to fix seemingly anything, and most of all, the comfort of simply knowing that Dad was there.
But there is also a sense of peace.
Roldan is no longer hurting. He is no longer fighting. He can finally rest.
And one thought brings his family tremendous comfort: after ten long years apart, they can imagine Roldan finally seeing Emma again—the husband reunited with his wife, and two people who shared a life together finally together once more.
Roldan lived a wonderful life. He worked hard. He built a life from the ground up. He raised his children. He loved his family. And he leaves behind more memories, lessons, and stories than could ever be captured in just a few words.
He spent so much of his life building, repairing, and fixing things for everyone else.
Now, Roldan can finally rest.
And his family finds comfort in believing that, after all these years, he and Emma are together again—perhaps holding hands once more.
