Susan Gachesa Edwards, age 77, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025. Born on June 22, 1948, in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the cherished daughter of the late Charles and LaRue Gachesa.
A graduate of Cheney High School's Class of 1966 in Youngstown, OH, Susan carried her love of learning and curiosity throughout her life. She had a keen intellect and a work ethic second to none.
Susan was a devoted wife and shared a loving life with her husband, Bob Edwards, and their beloved dogs. She was a dedicated and tender mother to her daughter Jennifer Dunbar and her husband Chris; son Brian Edwards and his wife Tracy; and son David Edwards. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Eric, Jack, and Grace Dunbar; Samantha, Piper, and Harper Edwards and Justin Le. Susan also held a special place in her heart for her little brother Gary Gachesa and his wife Peggy.
A gifted artisan with an eye for detail and an appreciation of history, Susan was a skilled cross-stitcher for over five decades. She specialized in historic samplers and all things Christmas.
Susan was also a talented seamstress, creating baby clothes, pillowcases and beautiful quilts for her family. Her passion for needlework led her to become an active member of several quilting and stitching groups including Spirited Quilters of Duluth, Sew Positive, St. Michael's Quilters, Loose Threads, and the Sampler Guild of Georgia.
In addition to her textile arts, Susan had many other passions that enriched her life. She loved antiques and jewelry and was an avid reader who enjoyed a wide range of subjects from fiction to American and English History to topics in science. She even enjoyed a fun romance occasionally. Classic movies with happy endings brought her joy, as did music spanning from Tchaikovsky and Debussy to Patsy Cline and ABBA.
Susan had a deep affection for animals, especially dogs, and was involved with the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta. She also enjoyed wildlife and found beauty in all creatures great and small.
Baking was another way Susan expressed love for those around her. From pound cakes to cookies to pastries and muffins, she delighted family and friends with sweet treats made from scratch, skills she honed even further by attending King Arthur's Baking School in Vermont. Making Christmas cookies with family was one of her favorite events of the year.
Her home at Newcastle Farm provided the small-town feel she cherished deeply. There she participated actively in book club, bunco nights, bible study groups, and other neighborhood gatherings.
A favorite pastime was exploring new places and backroads, long car rides where she was always curious to learn the history of the communities along the way. Susan will be remembered for her curiosity, humor, creativity, generosity of spirit, and above all, for the love she gave so freely to those around her. May her memory bring comfort to all.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Great Pyrenees Rescue of Atlanta (GPRA).
