Obituary

Walter Danny Degler passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, at the age of 84.

From a young age, Walter was recognized as a mathematical prodigy. His remarkable curiosity and love of learning remained with him throughout his life. He taught himself German and went on to learn several other languages fluently. His love of language eventually led him to Heidelberg, Germany, where he taught English for five years.

Walter was always willing to share his knowledge with others. He assisted his mother in teaching mathematics to grade school students and, later in life, continued to pursue learning in many different fields. He attended Indiana University and came just short of completing his PhD.

His talents extended well beyond mathematics and academics. Walter served for a time in the National Guard and later became a senior software engineer, teaching himself numerous computer languages and developing software professionally. Among his accomplishments was assisting in the development of software that studied sleep and was used in the NASA Space Shuttle program. True to his humble nature, Walter rarely spoke about or took credit for the significance of his work.

Walter also had a deep appreciation for the arts. He enjoyed photography, art, and classical music, and for a time, he took up playing the banjo.

Those who knew Walter will remember not only his extraordinary intellect, but also his quiet humility, curiosity, and lifelong love of learning. He lived a life filled with knowledge, creativity, and accomplishments, yet never sought recognition for them.

Walter leaves behind a legacy of intelligence, kindness, and inspiration. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
